Overview
When the designers at Horst Affeldt Fördertechnik Service develop new conveyor systems for food producing and processing companies, they look for simplicity of design. The machines and systems used must be designed to be particularly robust. This is the only way to ensure the smooth operation of the plants over many years. Soil, sand, dust and water and the resulting abrasive and corrosive sediments must not be able to harm the equipment. Neither should the many splashes of water that are used when cleaning the goods. These aspects are particularly important for the electric drives used, as they are the most vulnerable components of the conveyor system, along with the ball bearings of the idlers. Affeldt therefore relies on IP66/69plus protected drum motors for its conveyor systems.

When it comes to the drum motor manufacturer, Affeldt relies on Rulmeca from Aschersleben, Germany, from whom he can obtain all the required drum motors from 370 watts to 7.5 kilowatts, the matching deflection drums, and the idlers for trough conveyors, as well as the rollers for sorting tables and enterers, if required, from a single source. Of course, this is also easier than having to purchase individual components from diàerent manufacturers. For Affeldt, however, the simplicity of the customer-supplier relationship is also important, which for him simply means fairness. Not all potential suppliers of drum motors and rollers focus exclusively on these components. Some of them build conveyors themselves and thus compete directly with their own customers. But Affeldt much prefers loyal suppliers like Rulmeca - provided, of course, that price, performance and service are right.
The Rulmeca drum motors convince with their all-in-one design, which impresses with its simplicity. The hermetic sealing of all drive components in the drum shell against the environment is the decisive technical advantage over conventional conveyor belt drives. Conveyor belts with drum motors convince due to the balanced weight distribution of the drive. The conveyor is no longer loaded on one side by a motor flanged to the side. The supports of the conveyor can be designed identically on both sides, which considerably simplifies the design of the system for heavy loads. Constructive torsion of the conveyor is effectively avoided; smooth running is also increased by Rulmeca drum motors.
